5/5
I was having some anxiety about doing the planning on my own and coming home disappointed due to missing something fabulous but our trip was absolutely magical, thanks to your itineraries, online videos and audio guides. We purchased the Yellowstone/Teton bundle for our Sept 2023 trip. I was so thrilled that all the hard work was already done for us! We took your suggestion to change hotels to keep the driving to a minimum and got an early start to beat the crowds on popular places. The audio files were AMAZING! We learned so much as we drove from point to point. We would have been lost without your amazing itinerary! Thanks for all you do to take the stress out of the planning process and help maximize a wonderful experience in our National Parks!

ABOUT US

Meet Matt And Cheryl

Hey, We’re Matt and Cheryl and we are on a mission to help people have amazing vacations. Not only do we write easy-to-follow itineraries, but we love to share interesting stories in our audio guides about all of our favorite places!

We live in Utah, just four hours away from awesome national parks like Zion and Yellowstone, and have spent our lives exploring the West and the Rocky Mountains.  We often travel with both sets of our retired parents (they like each other!) and our four teenagers (who like to travel…sometimes).

We met in a history of Utah class at Weber State University and tied the knot 22 years ago. Matt worked for Social Security and taught adjunct history classes at our alma mater. Cheryl taught special education for 28 years and continues to volunteer by teaching a weekly dance fitness class.

We took a shot at our dream in 2020 and started making YouTube videos about the national parks we know so well. We now have over 10,000,000 views and have sold over 12,000 guides. We are delighted to help travelers fulfill dreams of their own!

We love trying out all the activities and working with local experts to give the best, most up-to-date travel advice out there.

We Support This Park!

At We’re in the Rockies, we believe in preservation and donate 5% of the proceeds of your purchase to Yellowstone Forever, the parks non-profit partner, to ensure access and enjoyment for future generations.

BE YOUR TRAVEL GROUP'S FAVORITE TOUR GUIDE!

Still got questions? We've Got Answers.

Sure. If you have extra time, additional activities are listed in the guide.

But, we do think that if you have 5-7 days to visit Yellowstone, you should check out Yellowstone for 3-4 days and then head to Grand Teton for 2-3 days.

It is easy to condense our Yellowstone itinerary into 3 days and we give ideas of exactly how to do it in the itinerary.

We also give ideas of how to see Yellowstone in 2 days.  It’s not our favorite way to see the park, but it is doable, especially if you are willing to do longer days.

No, that is the beauty of this itinerary. The days are interchangeable so you can do them in any order to complement your travel days in and out of the park.

Even though this guide works for travel from late May through September, we really enjoy visiting in September.

Yellowstone is a large park and handles crowds better than many national parks. However, there will be some crowds, even in September.

We also like visiting in June/July because there are pretty wildflowers.

Something important to know is that Yellowstone gets a lot of snow in the winter.

If this is your once-in-a-lifetime trip, avoid traveling in May or October as an early or late snowstorm can close the park down.

Yellowstone is our favorite national park, we’ve been there over 40 times and we have done practically everything both inside the park and in the surrounding areas.

We travel with both sets of our retired parents and our 4 kids (who are now teens) so we have a pretty good radar on the interests of most types of travelers.

We recommend what we believe are the absolute best spots in the park and give back up options for longer hikes or things that cost.

We give activity descriptions and approximate prices to help you decide which activities are the best value for you!

We are of the mindset that you have a plan so you can be flexible.

We lay out what we believe are the best activities for your time and money but we all have different preferences.

Because each activity listed is color coded- as either a “must see” or a “nice to see”, and has an approximate time frame and cost, you’ll easily be able to adjust to best suit your group’s interests.

We surveyed our customers and they reported that our guides saved them 10-20 hours of trip planning research, on average.

Although much of the information included in this guide can be found with significant research, this guide combines what you need to know into one place and it is from a source committed to giving you the best information.

This guide cost us over $15,369 to create when you combine travel expenses, map creation, and formatting.  In addition, we have spent hundreds of hours visiting this park and doing additional research. The audio guide alone was over 100 hours of labor (but of course, a labor of love!)

Many of our travelers enjoy the confirmation that they have already created a good plan and may even find a thing or two to add to it.

Other travelers may find that our plan is similar to what they had already pieced together on their own.

If you’ve already spent hours planning, you may not find maximum value in this guide.

Yes! We travel with our 4 children and both sets of our parents.  Although not every activity is for everyone, there are always backup suggestions.

We write these guides so all the work you should need to do is obtain your lodging and reservations.  We include maps, the time needed to complete drives and activities, and lodging recommendations (areas to stay-not actual hotels). We put boxes throughout the guide indicating it’s an item that you will need to take care of before you leave. We also give links to websites we think you should check before your leave.

Yes! Yellowstone in huge and there is no shuttle.  Almost every road in the park is paved and passable in a regular vehicle. There are a few roads that you can’t take an RV on and we address those in our guide.

Yes. We give approximate time frames that are needed to complete an activity.  The schedule is generally not so packed that you have to be a quick traveler.  But, if you know you generally need more time, you can make adjustments. If you are quick, there are suggestions for additional activities

This is a digital download so it will be EMAILED to you. That way you can have access immediately and have the option to download it to any device you want.

Many travelers, including us, prefer to print the itinerary and take it with us as we travel.

The itinerary and audio guide are available immediately upon purchase, right on this webpage. You will also receive an email within 30 minutes with download links in case you need to revisit the links and download the items later. If you don’t receive your email, check your junk mail folder. If it’s not there, contact mattandcheryl@wereintherockies.com and we’ll be in touch with you within 1 business day. Also, the guides will be available in your account, if you choose to establish one (we highly encourage it).

You need cell reception to download the audio guides. Once they are downloaded, no cell reception is needed.

Most people download the audio guides to their phone before they leave.

Just in case you are wondering, an average audio guide takes 150 MB of storage space.

Guides are automatically updated to the latest version when you create an account.

In addition to that, we also send an email notification out when a guide is updated. Just make sure to stay subscribed to our email list so we can reach you.

Because the download is a PDF file, you can do it on any device: computer, iPhone, Android, tablet, etc.

Stuff like this happens. We get it. When you purchase a guide, you have access to 18 months of free updates.

If you created an account, just log in again and download your guides.

If you didn’t create an account or forgot your password, just email us and we can resend your links.

Yellowstone in the winter is a completely different park. This guide is written for travel late May through September.

Yes!! We update our guides as needed, but write the concepts to intentionally be as timeless as possible. We encourage you to purchase the guide as soon as you know you will be traveling. It will help you determine which areas to stay and how many days to obtain lodging. Upon purchase, you’ll be guided to create an account on our website. If we update the guide, it will automatically show in your account for up to 18 months after purchase.

It is not required but is HIGHLY recommended. We encourage you to create an account when purchasing the guides because you’ll have access to the links at any time.

You will have access to the updated guide through your account (another reason to create an account) for up to 18 months. We generally send an email announcement when we do an update as well.

We put approximate price ranges on all our activities so you know what to expect. The good news is that most things in this guide are free once you pay for entrance into the national park!

Although we do suggest some hikes, we offer plenty of alternatives if hiking is not desirable including viewpoints and drives.

One of our favorite things about Yellowstone is that so many of the attractions are very near the road so you don’t need to hike to see cool things.

We also like many of the paths are boardwalks which helps with accessibility.

  • You will need to save the .mp3 files to your phone or tablet.  When you purchase the guide, it will come with instructions showing you how to save the files to your device.
  • You will need a way to listen to them while driving, such as:
    • bluetooth connection
    • cable connection
    • earbuds or wireless ear pods

If you need technical support, check out our help with downloads page.  If you are still struggling, you can email us at mattandcheryl@wereintherockies.com

We recently returned from our 10 day adventure to Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Jackson and Cody! We couldn’t have done it without you! I am a planner and having your itineraries gave me the confidence to know that we would have stress free travel knowing what to do when we arrived and enjoy as much as possible. I briefly spoke with several other travelers who were also there for the first time and had very little idea about what they wanted to see. One traveler asked me if Old Faithful was the only geyser in Yellowstone. Oh my! All of your tips and guidance were so valuable! We enjoyed watching many of your YouTube programs and attended your live webinar just prior to our trip. Thank you for helping us have a successful “bucket list” trip!

We just returned from a 10-day trip to Grand Teton & Yellowstone National Parks and want to send a huge THANK YOU to Matt & Cheryl, for all the helpful information you provided for planning and executing our vacation. Your guides, YouTube videos & Zoom chat were extremely helpful in planning our daily route and stops. The audio guides / stories were also a blast to listen to as we drove. A question about our day would come up and someone would inevitably ask “What do Matt & Cheryl say?” Our trip was much improved because we acquired your guides! We stayed 9 nights in 7 different locations and had a blast! Dornan’s Cabins (2 nights), Old Faithful Inn (“Old House”), Mammoth Hotel Cabins, Roosevelt Cabins (did the chuckwagon dinner too!), Cody (2 nights Airbnb). Lake Lodge Cabins & Colter Bay Cabins. We moved around to reduce backtracking. Staying in cabins made the daily move easy because you park right outside the cabin. We travelled the Beartooth Highway between the Roosevelt & Cody stays and WOW was that amazing. Thanks for all your help, Matt & Cheryl!

In July 2024 five family members traveled to Yellowstone. I had purchased your guide because this was our first trip there. I made a print out of every page and put them in a binder because it can be passed around better than looking at a small phone. I then marked each item I wanted to see and stuck to it. My binder is full of my comments and highlighted markings. I was coming from Bozeman airport so my first leg was welcome to Wonderland. We stayed outside of West Yellowstone so it was a perfect way to see adventure before getting to the cabin. The 2nd day was American Serengeti where we saw HERDS of buffalo. Day 3 was the Heart of Yellowstone and day 4 was Geyser gazing. When I plan a trip I must know the miles and time needed to be successful and your guide met all my check marks. Your information on what to see, time necessary to see it and length of walks was very helpful. I even did not miss a meal thanks to your detailed guide. You made the trip successful for me.

Due to a last minute change of plans, I found myself planning an early summer trip to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons with just a month of prep time this past May. The trip included myself, my 3 kiddos (ages 9-13), and my mom. It felt overwhelming! Thankfully, I happened upon Matt & Cheryl’s YouTube videos, and once it became clear that I didn’t have time to research everything myself, I took the plunge and bought the travel guides for both parks. It was money well spent, and we had a wonderful trip. We followed the basic itineraries provided in the guides and adjusted as we wanted or needed day to day. It was really helpful to feel like we had the information to prioritize what to see. I loved being able to hit hot spots early – before the crowds. A couple of times, we passed these same spots later in the day, and we were SO thankful we were not the people parking way out on the street and trekking to see things. We all loved Matt’s audio guide and learned so much about the parks. There is a good bit of driving between destinations in Yellowstone, especially, and we all looked forward to getting back in the car to hear the next installment (I think the audio guides prevented a LOT of grumbling). My daughter even listed the audio as one of her favorite parts of the trip. I think our trip would have consisted of many more frustrations without Matt & Cheryl’s guides. It goes without saying that the next time I am able to visit a National Park out west, I’m coming back for another guide. Highly recommend.

We are from the Netherlands and this summer, we went on a road trip in the West of the U.S. for the first time. Besides a couple of cities, we definitely wanted to see and hike some parks during our 3 and a half weeks of holiday. Planning the big trip, we found Matt & Cheryl on the internet. Their (audio) guides (Yellowstone, Grand Canyon and Zion) as well as some of their YouTube videos were a fantastic help in preparing our trip, especially as we had very limited time to visit each park and did not exactly know what to expect. The guides are very well researched, clear, full of practical information and with some great insider tips (one of our most memorable highlights was a sunrise in Grand Canyon with nobody else but our family – just awesome…). The audio guides give some interesting background information and are entertaining to listen to when on the road.
If we come back for another park, we will surely buy the according guide again. And hopefully we can come back – what a beautiful nature you have over there:)!

We absolutely recommend We’re in the Rockies.

Purchased the guide for an upcoming trip, and was not disappointed. The guide is well laid out with a lot of great information and guidance. You can clearly tell there is a passion put into this guide. Highly recommend.

  2. Ashley Norris (verified owner)

I purchased the Yellowstone 4 day itinerary and audio tour for May 2022. It did not disappoint! It was so helpful. We were able to see so much more than if we had tried to plan it ourselves. We all loved the audio tour stories, even my teenager (that says something!!). The stories were very entertaining and kept our attention. We couldn’t wait to get back into the car to start the next story. The itinerary was very easy to follow and hit all the popular attractions with great tips that were on point. I was on the fence, then purchased this itinerary the day before our trip. I am so grateful I did. I highly recommend “were in the rockies”. I won’t hesitate to purchase another itinerary if we visit any of the other parks! Thanks for helping to make our first family trip to Yellowstone fantastic.

  3. Lisa Camp (verified owner)

I purchased the Yellowstone bundle with the audio guide for a 4 day trip in June 2021. I am so glad I found you guys on YouTube! We followed your 3 day suggested plan and I really feel that we were able to see all the highlights in the park. My family even enjoyed the accompanying audio of Matt’s history lesson as we drove to our destinations. (At first they grumbled but they really loved the stories of the wolves and the rockslide. They even complained when we ran out of audio files!) I love that the guide has a realistic time schedule for traveling to and from locations and even suggestions for hikes with little ones. I also really like how you suggest locations in the park with accompanying maps. This was my first time at Yellowstone, and I can see how easy it is to be overwhelmed by the huge park. Your guide made it so manageable for this mom! I bought two other print guides from the bookstore, but I ended up only using yours. Can’t wait to travel to Zion this summer and use your guide!
