Places

- Monument Valley. A cornerstone of any trip to the Southwest and a uniquely American icon, featuring towering buttes dotted across the desert landscape.
- Four Corners National Monument. A photo op for those who want to say they stood in four states at one time. It’s the only place in America where four states meet up.
- Mesa Verde National Park. See ancient cliff-dwellings in the alcoves of red rock canyons. Ranger-led tours will take you through the dwellings! The tours are one of the best and most unique activities in any national park.
- Petrified Forest. A lesser-known national park with a few short hikes through petrified forests and painted deserts, Pueblo ruins, and even a Route 66 stop.
- Chaco Culture National Historical Park. Located in northwestern New Mexico and one of the least visited national park units in the United States. It has the largest ancient structures with a combined total of 700 rooms!
- Aztec Ruins. Spectacular “Great House” ruin that was part of the Chacoan Culture.
- Hovenweep National Monument. A wonderful collection of ancient ruin towers with an easy and fun hike to get close to them.
- Goosenecks. This is an overlook of the San Juan River as it snakes through deep canyons.
- Moki Dugway. The Moki Dugway is a series of switchbacks taking you from the top of the mesa to the bottom, offering awesome views of the desert below.
- Valley of the Gods. This is like a mini-Monument Valley. It also has a bumpy but scenic, 17-mile drive through wonderful red rock towers and buttes.
- Natural Bridges. Three massive natural bridges carved by water over millions of years.
- Fort Bluff. A great recreation of a historical fort, honoring the original pioneers who arrived via a treacherous journey across the Colorado River. Beautiful grounds, a movie, treats, and fun options for kids.
- Canyon de Chelly. Incredible cliff dwellings, towering red rock walls, and Navajo-run tours that will take you to dwellings and petroglyphs most will never see.
