Hey, we’re Matt and Cheryl, and we are on a mission to help people have amazing vacations. Not only do we write easy-to-follow itineraries, but we also love to share interesting stories in our audio guides about all of our favorite places!
We live in Utah, just four hours away from awesome national parks like Zion and Yellowstone, and have spent our lives exploring the West and the Rocky Mountains. We often travel with both sets of our retired parents (they like each other!) and our four teenagers (who like to travel…sometimes).
We met in a history of Utah class at Weber State University and tied the knot in 2002. Matt worked for Social Security and taught adjunct history classes at our alma mater. Cheryl taught special education for 28 years and continues to volunteer by teaching a weekly dance fitness class.
We took a shot at our dream in 2020 and started making YouTube videos about the national parks we know so well. We now have over 20 million views and have sold over 24,000 guides. We are delighted to help travelers fulfill dreams of their own!

We have visited each of these parks several times. We have done practically everything both inside the parks and in the surrounding areas.
We travel with both sets of our retired parents and our 4 kids (who are now teens), so we have a pretty good radar on the interests of most types of travelers.
We recommend what we believe are the absolute best spots in the park and give backup options for longer hikes or things that cost.

Although much of the information included in our guides can be found with significant research, these guides combine what you need to know into one place and it is from a source committed to giving you the best information.
Every year, we spend 70 days on the road and over $40,000 to make sure our guides are top-notch and up-to-date. We also have expenses of custom map creation, guide formatting, and proofreading. In addition, each audio guide takes between 100 and 180 hours of labor (but of course, a labor of love!)
Instead of you sorting through an outdated, 500+ page travel book filled with flowery language from a travel writer, we get right to the point by grouping the best sites into days to minimize drive time and help you know what you can reasonably accomplish. Also included are driving routes from various starting locations. We pay for all of our travel and our loyalty is to you. If something is a waste of time or money – we tell you.
Many of our travelers enjoy the confirmation that they have already created a good plan and may even find a thing or two to add to it.
Other travelers may find that our plan is similar to what they had already pieced together on their own.

Yes! We travel with our 4 children and both sets of our parents. Although not every activity is for everyone, there are always backup suggestions.
We write these guides so all the work you should need to do is obtain your lodging and reservations. We include maps, the time needed to complete drives and activities, and lodging recommendations. We put boxes throughout the guide indicating it’s an item that you will need to take care of before you leave. We also give links to websites we think you should check before you leave.
Yes. We give approximate time frames that are needed to complete an activity. The schedule is generally not so packed that you have to be a quick traveler. But if you know you generally need more time, you can make adjustments. If you are quick, there are suggestions for additional activities
This is a digital download, so it will be EMAILED to you. That way, you can have access immediately and have the option to download it to any device you want.
Many travelers, including us, prefer to print the itineraries and take them with us as we travel.
The itinerary and audio guide are available immediately upon purchase, right on this webpage. You will also receive an email within 30 minutes with download links in case you need to revisit the links and download the items later. If you don’t receive your email, check your junk mail folder. If it’s not there, contact mattandcheryl@wereintherockies.com, and we’ll be in touch with you within 1 business day.
Also, the guides will be available in your account if you choose to establish one (we highly encourage it).
You need cell reception to download the audio guides. Once they are downloaded, no cell reception is needed.
Most people download the audio guides to their phone before they leave.
Just in case you are wondering, an average audio guide takes 150 MB of storage space.
National parks constantly change, including timed-entry requirements, construction, fires, and closures. To keep you updated on the most current things going on, we have a Parks Updates page that we update every week with important information. We recommend you look at this as soon as you begin planning your trip, as well as a few days before you leave.
Guides are automatically updated to the latest version when you create an account.
In addition to that, we also send an email notification out when a guide is updated. Just make sure to stay subscribed to our email list so we can reach you.
Because the download is a PDF file, you can do it on any device: computer, iPhone, Android, tablet, etc.

I purchased the Ultimate Western Road Trip Bundle – if you want to make the most of your time at the parks, this is the absolutely worth it. After being overseas for a year I wanted to visit the American West, I had never been…I had only seen movies and paintings. I visited Grand Canyon, and the Mighty 5 – six parks in 15 days. This itinerary gave me options and flexibility to do fun hikes and enjoy the best sites/views. I really enjoyed the audio guides, Matt is a great storyteller/historian. Two things I’ll never forget, the drive (itinerary recommended routes) and the night stars – an experience that pictures could never explain. I believe I made the most of my time at these parks. I want to visit the Grand Tetons, Yellowstone and Glacier in 2025.

Thank you for the time and research you put into your trip guides. We full time RV with the goal of enjoying and exploring God’s creation as well as allowing history to come alive for our sons. We are blessed to have the opportunity to see so many amazing locations. This spring-summer we looked forward to traveling to White Sands, Saguaro, the Grand Canyon, Mesa Verde, Arches, Canyon lands, Zion, Redwoods, Olympic, Glacier, Yellowstone, the Black hills, and Theodore Roosevelt NP. However, we soon realized that going from place to place to place while working, homeschooling and all the normal life things was very different from planning for 1-2 family vacations a year. We were totally overwhelmed and didn’t have the time to research or plan like we wanted to. We started to worry that we really wouldn’t get a good sense of the places we were going. We bought the Ultimate Western Bundle a few weeks ago and already feel like we got our moneys worth. We are planning a trip to Glacier and Yellowstone this year, and because we have the other guides to hand, are now also planning a trip to Utah in 2027. The notes and tips in the guides are exceptional – and have really helped us in planning the trip (and saved us so much time) – we have been able to build in some additional activities, which we didn’t even know were options (making the trip extra special).
The guides are beautifully laid out and easy to follow… I’m a “note taker” so printed mine out and have had great fun working through them highlighting and making notes, while my husband prefers to do the research via a screen and is using it to look up and use links to details included – best of both worlds.

We have made several RV trips to the Yellowstone and Grand Teton National park, without a plan or background information, we knew we were not getting the maximum experience out of your journeys. As grandparents of a 2025 high school graduate and a 2025 college graduate we wanted to gift our only grandchildren with a wonderful memory. Since we are from a Mid Atlantic state we had never visited the Western National Parks. So our gift was a trip west to see as many of the National Parks and scenery as our allotted time would allow. My son insisted on a driving trip, so let the adventure begin. Due to life events I did not have a year to plan in advance. But I had been watching youtube videos of Matt and Cheryl. I was very impressed so I purchased their whole package. And what a wonderful deal it was. Their itinerary was so detailed and full of information on navigation, must see, places to eat and stay. I could not have gotten this much information even if I had researched for a whole year. We followed their guide and was able to see everything we wanted and more than we imagined. Visiting the Badlands, Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse, the Needles, Custer Park, Deadwood, Cody Wy (we saw a circuit Rodeo July 3), Yellowstone (where Ranger told us how to get hotel in Yellowstone for 2 nights) Grand Tetons, Jackson Wy, Antelope Canyon, Bryce Canyon. Zion, Grand Canyon, Painted Desert. This is not counting all the touristy stops along the way. This was really a spiritiual trip because at every vista, I saw the handiwork of God on display. Awesome trip….. 24 days, approx 6000 miles and 16 states and it was a joyful whirlwind.

This is honestly one of the best purchases I’ve ever made! They are truly designed for everyone – I am a solo traveler in her 20’s and it was perfect for me (and as you can see from other reviews, it’s also perfect for families, and retired couples, etc). Even though I had about 35 pages of my own notes from researching my trip, I took a chance on buying one of Matt and Cheryl’s guides to see if I was missing any info. After reading it, I promptly bought this bundle with all their guides because it was THAT good! I just returned from a 3-week trip to Utah, Arizona, and surrounding areas, and I can’t imagine taking my trip without these guides. They are really all you need.
Pro tip, don’t skip out on using the audio guides! Everyone can visit the parks and see the cool sights, but what made my trip unique to all the other tourists was the deeper understanding of what I was looking at and the history behind it. The audio guides alone are worth it!
